Designing in the real world
Many employers ask applicants or new employees to demonstrate their skills under time constraints. This demo will prepare you for that experience and help you assess your ability to make quick decisions, navigate the software, and report back.
Important: This assignment is due on Wednesday at 11:59pm. We cannot accept late work, so be sure you submit the file several minutes early to avoid getting a zero. This is a test, so you may not turn it in later or use your mulligan (please plan accordingly).
Scenario
It’s your first day as an intern for Gro Engineering. The company is creating a marketing flier to inform potential clients about their services. They need you to come up with a design for their flier. They want to use their old logo; it should be the focal point of the design. However, they do not have a high-resolution file of their old logo so you will need to recreate it. They informed you, it does not have to be exactly the same, just an updated version of the example they gave you. They would like a cool texture for the background and the required text (see instructions).
Record the time you start and the time you stop working on this project so you can submit your total billable hours.
You may use any resource available to you except the tutor, classmates, friends or family. Please work alone as if you were completing this as part of a job interview so the employer can see what you can do in a short amount of time. You must complete and submit your own, original work. Google is your friend!
Billable Hours:
It is important to do high-quality work. However, if you spend too much time on it, the company or client will not want to hire you back due to the higher cost. Working quickly and tracking your time spent designing is an important part of working in the design world. You will not be graded on how long you spend on this design, but keep track of the time you spend and report it in the comments. This is so you are aware of how long it takes for you to design and if you are taking longer than 2-3 hours, then this should be something you practice more.
Instructions:
- Choose your design software (must be one we used this semester): Word, PowerPoint, InDesign, or Photoshop.
- Set up a document to be 8.5×11 (Traditional U.S. Paper Size)
- Take a screenshot of the logo so you can use it as your guide. You can find the logo in your book: Visual Focus, Chapter 6: Unifying the Parts, page: 180
- Find a simple/zen texture, that will fit an Engineeringenvironmentally conscious company. Check out www.textures.com or www.pixabay.com for a variety of high-resolution textures.
- Using a tool to create shapes update the logo, so that it has a similar feel to the old one, with all the same text/similar style, but a more modern look. You must create an original logo.
- Add your texture to the background
- You may add a few words, if desired, to organize the content. Follow the typography rules you’ve learned.
Include all of the following text. Be sure to correct any misspelled words or mistakes:
- Gro Engineering
- With mother nature in mind
- What are we about?
- Developing a new technology from scratch is a complex and time-consuming business, so wouldn’t it be handy if scientists had a pre-existing blueprint at their disposal? As it happens, they do, and fortuitously it exists all around us: nature. And using nature as your template provides the added bonus of not having to worry about pesky patents. The science of copying nature, known as biomimetics, is not altogether new – think radar, Velcro and da Vinci’s flying machines – but it is garnering increasing atention, with anything from the biomechanics of frog legs, to the sensing ability of rat’s whiskers, being used as a basis for new inventions. And the field is likely to become much busier, because according to one industry insider, there is currently only a 10 percent overlap between biology and technology in terms of the mechanisms used. With such a treasure trove of potential scientific innovation in the offing, a band of like-minded scientific researchers recently converged at Georgia Tech’s International Symposium for Biologically-Inspired Design and Engineering, to share their biologically inspired research.
